The Wing Chapel is the prison chapel within Staja (State Jail) Number 84F, a space that becomes the unlikely fulcrum of Alex's calculated campaign for early release. It is here that Alex, serving as the stereo operator for Sunday services and private religious study, cultivates a facade of reform that directly leads to his selection for the experimental Ludovico Technique, a procedure that will strip him of his capacity for moral choice.

Location and Role in Prison Life

The Wing Chapel is one of four such chapels in Staja 84F, located at the back near the warders, or chassos, who stand guard with rifles. It is a space of stark contrasts: the prisoners sit in their "horrible cal-coloured prison platties," emitting a distinctive, hopeless stench of "dusty, greasy, hopeless sort of a von," while the chaplain, a "bolshy great burly bastard with a very red litso," delivers fire-and-brimstone sermons. Alex's duty is to operate the "starry stereo," playing solemn music before, during, and after the service, a task that grants him a privileged position and a degree of freedom within the prison's rigid hierarchy.

Alex's Manipulation and the Chaplain

Alex exploits his role in the Wing Chapel to ingratiate himself with the prison chaplain, whom he calls "the charles" or "charlie." He uses the chapel's stereo to listen to holy music by J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel while reading the Bible, finding particular delight in the violent Old Testament stories of "starry yahoodies tolchocking each other." More crucially, Alex becomes an informant, passing fabricated stories about prison plots to the chaplain, who then relays them to the Governor to enhance his own reputation. Alex's feigned religious devotion and cooperation are a calculated performance, designed to earn him the remission he desperately seeks. The chaplain, however, is conflicted, later confessing to Alex his deep ethical doubts about the Ludovico Technique, warning that "goodness comes from within" and that "when a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man."

The Turning Point: Selection for the Ludovico Technique

The Wing Chapel is the setting for the pivotal moment that seals Alex's fate. After the death of a cellmate in a fight, the Minister of the Interior visits the prison and, observing the overcrowded and violent conditions, declares that "common criminals like this unsavoury crowd can best be dealt with on a purely curative basis." He singles out Alex as a "trail-blazer" for the new Ludovico's Technique. Later that evening, Alex is summoned from the Wing Chapel to the Governor's office, where he is informed of his selection and pressured to sign a consent form. The chaplain, in a final, tearful interview in his small office adjoining the chapel, attempts to absolve himself of responsibility, but Alex, inwardly smecking, sees only the path to freedom. The Wing Chapel, a place ostensibly of spiritual redemption, thus becomes the antechamber to a procedure that will mechanize his soul.
